A woman was recently found guilty of poisoning her husband and stealing his money to gamble on poker machines. Rosalina Victoria Carter, a 48-year-old Mackay resident, was indicted on charges of malicious acts and fraud. The Mackay District Court found Carter guilty, and sentenced her to three years and nine months in prison. Judge Michael Shanahan decided that Carter's sentence was to be suspended after 15 months.

The video poker addict was also found guilty of stealing $3,000 from her husband Ken's bank accounts. In 2001, Carter laced her husband's coffee no less than three times with an anti-depressant. The first time, Ken Carter had to be rushed to intensive care after he got involved in a car accident. The second and third times, he also had to be admitted to hospital.
