Online Poker Boom Gets Help from New York Transit Strike
Creeping into its third day, the New York transit strike has left around seven million people up the creek without a paddle, so to speak. Those who could walk, walked; those who managed to flag down a cab indeed did so; those who couldn't manage either apparently stayed home and played poker online. At least that's what the records are showing at a number of online poker sites. DoylesRoom.com, the online poker room backed by poker legend Doyle Brunson, reportedly saw the number of active players double during the strike's first day. Many of these players were located in the New York area. Another site, BetOnSports.com also reported that its online poker room had benefited from a significant rise in active games, between 30 and 35 percent more than on a average day. The transit strike has received national attention, with President Bush even trying to intervene. It seems that, without the means to get around it, the city that never sleeps has been put on hold. It's nice to know that the people of New York are using their free time wisely, brushing up their poker skills.
