Poker aficionados and newbies alike can rejoice because the Lycos search engine has recently provided further evidence that the poker trend in on the up-and-up. Yes, it's that time of the year again, time for “The Lycos 50," a list of the site's most popular search terms of the year. The list is a handy indication of what's on the screens of Web surfers around the globe. Confirming the status of poker in mainstream online culture, poker has made it to the top 10 for the second year in a row, joining the likes of Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson and Hurricane Katrina.

Last year, poker debuted on the top 10, taking the number 10 spot. This year, poker has moved up the ranks, and now stands as the fourth most searched term on the Lycos search engine. Poker even nabbed number one in the “Top Fads of 2005" category, beating out, among other things, “iPods," “yoga" and “crochet." Also worthy of note, poker's number one fad status was accompanied by a number eight position for Texas hold'em, meaning a double whammy for poker in the category.

Fourth place in the general annual ranking is indeed more than respectable, but there is evidence that poker may continue moving up in the world. For the past couple of months, poker has repeatedly occupied the top two positions in Lycos' weekly rankings.
