New York Poker Club Gets Busted
In a continuing effort to curb the activities of New York City's popular underground poker clubs, police busted yet another club this past Friday night. As part of the raid, 13 employees of the Broadway Club were arrested, and $56,000 were confiscated by police. The authorities also reportedly happened upon an unspecified amount of Marijuana. The 13 employees arrested are reportedly up against charges that include promoting gambling. The investigation into the poker club is ongoing, and was initiated following a complaint that a customer had taken out a gun at the establishment. According to New York State law, real-money poker games are legal. The potential illegality of such games comes into play when certain parties profit from hosting or promoting the games. The Broadway Club did not actually earn money directly from players' bets, but rather charged a fee for the amount of time spent playing. Nonetheless, the authorities have been reported as saying that even this “rental" of space constitutes illegal promotion of gambling.
