Oddities in Online Poker: From the dead to the resurrected
This has indeed been a strange week for online poker. On the one hand, we have a supposed deceased millionaire with a dying wish to launch an online poker site. On the other, we have a poker playing Jesus- need I say more?
For starters, we have Lionel "Lucky" Brown, the purported inspiration behind a new free Texas hold'em poker site, called LastCallPoker.com. Whether simply the makings of an online urban legend, or the real thing, the story goes that millionaire Mr. Brown designated $5 million of his life's earnings to create Last Call Poker. To celebrate Lionel Brown's “life," albeit in a rather twisted fashion, Last Call Poker is hosting a series of poker-themed “wakes" at cemeteries across the U.S. There, poker playing fans of the macabre will play tombstone hold'em, a game the site claims was invented by Brown himself. In tombstone hold'em, actual tombstones are used as hole cards. Weird.
From death, we move on to rebirth. A new Texas hold'em strategy site by the name of PokerJesusOnline.com claims that when Jesus isn't saving souls, he's playing a bit of poker. Naturally, all this Jesus-poker talk is all in good fun, lest the more gullible among us come to expect the man himself at next year's WSOP. When it comes down to it, though, Poker Jesus Online has a lot more to do with poker than with Jesus. Browse through the site, and you'll find that aside from its domain name and home page, it's basically just another online poker portal.
