Networks with Poker Shows Should Aid Gambling Treatment, Says NJ Legislator
Casinos in New Jersey donate $600,000 a year to combat problem gambling. A legislator in the state is calling on a number of television networks to shoulder their share of the responsibility. Joan Voss, D-Bergen is proposing that television networks broadcasting poker programming be required to donate money to agencies treating gambling problems. To a great extent, televised poker is behind the recent poker boom, and Voss thus believes that networks are partly responsible for some of the drawbacks of the game's popularity. Supporters of greater action on the part of television networks claim that as it stands, the broadcast media has for largely neglected to provide warnings or smart gambling tips for the poker fans watching at home.
